LAS CRUCES, N.M. (KDBC) — An ongoing investigation into an alleged incident of child abuse has now resulted in the arrest of the toddler's mother.
The four-year-old toddler is currently in a medically-induced coma.
Maria Gurrola-Nevarez, 23, is charged with one count of child abuse and one count of child abuse resulting in great bodily harm.
Her girlfriend, Yvette Piñon-Carbajal, was arrested earlier in the month for the same incident.
Piñon-Carbajal had been reportedly caring for the child while Gurrola was at work when she claimed the child fell in the bathtub, and slept often the rest of the day.
It wasn't until the girl suffered an apparent seizure that the couple took her to the hospital, according to Doña Ana County Sheriff's Dept. spokesperson Kelly Jameson.
Investigators say their story is not consisted with the girl's injuries.
She remains in critical condition at an El Paso hospital.
Piñon remains held at the Doña Ana County Detention Center on a $250,000 bond, Gurrola-Nevarez on a $150,000 bond.
