El Paso, TX (KDBC) — It's the most exciting wardrobe pick of the year, for one of the most memorable nights of their lives.
It's only February but millions of young girls across the country are already busy getting ready for high school prom.
But for many young girls, high school prom is an opportunity they'll have to pass up because they can't afford what they need most to go - the dress.
"It kind of like hurts me if a girl is not able to go to prom just because she doesn't have a dress so the fact that we can do this, it really does make me happy because I know if it were me and someone would do that for me I would be really thankful," Alexia Fonseca, a sophomore at Montwood High School.
What started as a small community service project quickly turned into a mini mall of options for young girls in El Paso on Saturday.
"Once we started asking, the dresses started coming in really quick," said Jazmine Cuevas, a second sophomore at Montwood High School.
Montwood High School students organized a prom dress donation drive, and with the help of Goodwill, Savers, and 10 other area high schools, 'Operation Prom' has collected some 200 dresses so far to make prom night special for their peers.
"These kids have been working since November putting this event together. It has been a lot of work - the kids have stayed here until 6 o'clock at night, making posters, promoting it," said Leslie Lopez, with the Student Activities Center at Montwood High School.
Goodwill also donated vouchers to the high school to raffle off for girls to get accessories, shoes, and makeup.
"Being able to experience it, knowing that there's actually other people able to help me, did something to make myself feel prettier than when I dress normal," said Raven Herrera, a student from Andress High School.
Raven and her mom Lisa made it a girl's day.
"It was nice to be able to know she could come somewhere and enjoy picking something without having to say 'Oh can we afford it, or is this okay or I'd like that but oh no, it's too much,'" said Raven's mom, Lisa.
Montwood High School is hosting a second give-away event on March 8th, and are still collecting prom dress donations.
