MESILLA, N.M. — The results in the Mesilla municipal election were made official Wednesday morning and voters re-elected Mayor Nora Barraza to another term by a margin of three votes.
Barraza received 308 votes and challenger Jesus Caro tallied 305.
"I had to look at it a couple of times to process that it was just three votes and just how crucial every vote is," Barraza said.
Tuesday night votes were counted nearly half a dozen times to insure there was no error and Wednesday morning the canvassing board made the totals official.
A relieved Barraza said she plans to continue working on various projects throughout town like the reconstruction of the gazebo at the plaza.
She added the town is also waiting on the governor to sign the state budget which has allocated funds for the remodel of the public safety building.
Voters also re-elected Linda Flores as trustee and Stephanie Johnson will join the rest of the board for her first term in office.
As of Wednesday afternoon none of the candidates have asked for a recount and have until Monday to make that request.
