MESILLA, NM - Dona Ana County Sheriff's Deputies found Gilles and Helga deLisle and their friend Peter Weith shot to death Thursday. And while police try to figure out who killed the three of them, a fourth family in Artesia, NM is mourning.
"My wife just really couldn't talk. She was heartbroken because what little we had left of our daughter had been destroyed," Gilbert Romo said.
Romo's 18-year old daughter died after a motorcycle crash in 1996, and her heart gave Gilles deLisle a second chance at life.
"Excuse me, I'm going to get a little emotional here. It's kind of ironic because he was quite older than I am, but I kind of considered him my son because he had my daughters heart," he said.
Romo said he used to call Gilles "mijo," (spanish slang for 'my son') and says he kept in touch with the deLisles often.
"He was very charismatic, a very humorous guy, full of energy. I would tell him, I said, damn it you're full of energy because you have my daughter's heart," he said.
But now, like the deLisles, his daughter is completely gone, and he's left hoping for the killer, or killers, to be arrested.
"Nobody deserves that. So, my hope for the future is that these people get caught," he said.
Police have questioned a "person of interest" in the case.
We'll continue to follow the story and let you know when a suspect is arrested.
