Melanoma apps are not so helpful

Thursday, January 17, 2013 - 12:33am

Using your smartphone to diagnose melanoma is not so smart according to a new study.

Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh studied four apps designed to analyze pictures of suspicious skin marks and provide a diagnosis.

They found 3 out of 4 of the apps incorrectly diagnosed a third of melanomas as "unconcerning."

The researchers are worried users may rely on these tools rather than seek the advice of a dermatologist.

This could lead to delayed treatment.
