On Monday, October 28, the City of El Paso along with other area entities will host the 2013 Cooperative Purchasing Forum at the Camino Real Hotel. The City’s Strategic Sourcing Department is sponsoring the forum in an effort to increase awareness and opportunities for local vendors to participate in cooperative contracts utilized by the City of El Paso.
The forum will bring together representatives from Federal, State, regional and national cooperatives to conduct an informational workshop to vendors on how to join their cooperative. Many of the cooperatives that will be attending have more than a thousand participating members. More than 500 attendees participated in the 2011 forum.
“This forum is all about helping our local vendors get their fair share of the public money that is used throughout the El Paso region and the Country,” said Mayor Oscar Leeser. “The City of El Paso will often purchase goods using cooperative contracts, and in numerous cases that money is spent on an out-of-town vendor. I would love to see that money stay here locally and help our economy. I want to see every vendor in El Paso at the forum.”
What is a purchasing cooperative program?
A purchasing cooperative program is a process where one governmental agency award bids for goods and services on behalf of its members. This allows for the members of the purchasing cooperative to obtain goods at a lower price because the cooperative can buy in large quantities, which reduces the overall price. At the same time, the vendors who participate with the cooperative programs have an opportunity to have their goods sold nationally and in large quantities.
