Man Surrenders to Police After SWAT Standoff

Wednesday, August 1, 2012 - 9:50am

What started as a domestic disturbance call in West El Paso, turned into a SWAT standoff after a man barricaded himself inside his home for several hours.

According to El Paso Police Department Spokesman Javier Sambrano, the 50 year-old man was involved in an argument with a family member when he locked himself inside the home on San Marcos Dr. near Executive Center Blvd.  Family members called 911 because they believed the man was armed with a gun.

"We did have info that this individual possibly had some weapons which is why we call specialized units to block off the streets," said Sambrano.

Officers arrived on the scene at 11:00 p.m. Friday, and it took nearly three hours for members of the Crisis Management Team to convince the man to come out of the house.

No injuries were reported.

The man was taken to a medical facility for evaluation.  Police said the man will not face criminal charges in this case.
