Man robbed trying to sell items on Craigslist

A central El Paso man tried to sell some of his belongings on Craigslist, but instead two robbers show up in front of his home.

We asked him, “Are you scared now?”

It's not the same now because you never know if they might come back and try to injure someone"

Ervey Cabrales is scared in his own home.

He was selling a cell phone and two handguns on Craigslist.

A man wanted to buy them, called him and arranged to meet at Cabrales' home at 10 Wednesday night.

Cabrales went to meet him outside.

"When I walked up, they're like, ‘Oh, can I see the item. I already got the money.’ So I empty the round, showed it to them and they're like, ‘Oh we also got some guns.’ So that's when… I thought about it twice and the next thing they do is they just take off," said Cabrales.

He said the buyer and another man were in a black Lincoln LS with rims.

Cabrales' sister said she wants this man caught before he does it again.

"We also ask the community but I'm sure that person does have a neighbor so somebody does know this guy. We have to get him off the streets," said Jenny Acosta.

The El Paso Police Department said you need to take precautions when buying and selling on Craigslist.

"Definitely, anytime that you are selling an item it's probably not a good idea to have somebody come all the way to your home. Meet in public, go somewhere where it's going to be other people around and be able to do the transaction the right way," said Javier Sambrano. "And obviously if you’re selling items, especially a handgun past 10 o'clock at night is not always prudent to do something like that."

Sambrano said, above all, trust your instincts.

"Definitely use common sense when you're going to be selling some type of item," said Sambrano.

Cabrales said he'll still post items on Craigslist, but he'll do things differently.

When meeting someone for the first time, please remember to:
• Insist on a public meeting place like a cafe
• Do not meet in a secluded place, or invite strangers into your home
• Be especially careful when buying/selling high value items
• Tell a friend or family member where you're going
• Take your cell phone along if you have one
• Consider having a friend accompany you
• Trust your instincts
