LAS CRUCES, N.M. — Las Cruces Police arrested an 18-year-old man for allegedly harming his teenage girlfriend.

Gustavo Perez now faces child abuse charges for smacking his 16-year-old girlfriend in the face while inside his car, police said. Perez was reportedly upset after hearing she had been talking with another boy.

During the incident, detectives said the girl attempted to exit his vehicle but each time was forcefully pulled back in by Perez. He eventually drove the girl to her home and allowed her to go inside.

The girl attempted to conceal several facial injuries with makeup but on Monday teachers at her high school noticed the bruises and notified law enforcement.

The girl’s injuries were not life-threatening.

Perez was arrested Monday evening and booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center with a cash-only bond set at $10,000.
