EL PASO — An elderly man in the Lower Valley woke up to a home filled with smoke and flames caused by an overnight house fire.
The fire started at midnight Friday morning, in the 7500 block of Parral St.
According to El Paso Fire Department Battalion Chief James Fanning, the fire started in the kitchen, possibly by grease left on the stove. The official cause of the fire is under investigation.
An elderly man was inside the house, but was able to escape safely.
"There was one occupant of the house, an elderly male. He's the only occupant. He was asleep at the time of the fire. He was awoken by smoke, heat. He heard glass breaking in the kitchen. He was able to get himself out of the house," said Fanning.
Firefighters were trying to prevent the fire from spreading to the attic of the home. It took 25 firefighters about 10 minutes to control the blaze.
Fanning said there was no working smoke detector in the home.
Damages are estimated at $50,000.
