Local reactions to Perry's announcement

Monday, July 8, 2013 - 7:57pm

It will be the first time in 14 years that Texas will have a new governor, the announcement opens the door for new republican state leaders and a chance for a new chapter in Texas, after 13 years in office, Governor Rick Perry is calling it quits, the republican announced today he will not seek re-election next year, Perry made the announcement in front of supporters in San Antonio.

"He is probably just getting ready to run for something else, he indicated he hadn't ruled out whether or not to run for president again" El Paso resident Katy Escobedo said.

"they should continue doing what they're doing cause all three form a good team for Texas, the conservative stand in Texas capital is what Texas needs" Salvador Gomez a central El Paso resident said.

Richard Dayoub from the El Paso Greater Chamber of Commerce says Perry's decision could have an impact on the state's economy and job creation rate in El Paso.

"it really depends on whether we elect a democrat or republican as to how it affects business not only in El Paso but statewide, so let's not break what's working all alone and for those aspects of our state wide government and economic development at the state level we would look at it and see what's not working and make it work better" Dayoub said.

The governor's announcement opens the possibility for other republicans leaders such as Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott and Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst to step in to the race.

"The guy who's in the senate Dewhurst, and the guy Greg Abbot he wants to move up, they all want to move up" a central El Paso resident said.

State democrats have criticized Governor Perry’s administration for education budget cuts; Dayoub says that has to be the next governor's priority.

"We’re the state everyone wants to be economically but we can't sustain that if we do not improve our educational system and our level of an educated workforce" Dayoub concluded.
