As students prepare to go back to school, local organizations Operation Hope and El Paso First Health are trying to help less fortunate families with back to school expenses.

Operation Hope has been helping the community since 2006 and collects school supplies and shoes for children from low-income families. Several reports indicate that more than 200,000 people in El Paso live below the poverty line. Co-Founder Angel Gomez said last year the group handed out 423 pairs of shoes and backpacks.

The organization accepted school supply donations at the Walgreens on Mesa on Saturday.

In Horizon City, El Paso First hosted a Back-to-School Health fair where 500 children received a free backpack.

Adriana Cadena with El Paso First said many families need the extra help.

"It makes a big difference because it can be between buying food for their table or be able to buy a backpack," said Cadena.
