EL PASO — The fiscal fear at the federal level is already having an impact on border issues.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials here in El Paso tell Local 4 News the agency has had to put several immigrants on supervised release to cut costs.
The exact number of immigrants released wasn't detailed.
Supporters of immigration reform are celebrating the move.
"We see this as a major victory for the immigrant community in as much as many people, especially people seeking political asylum, are being detained for prolonged times for minor violations," said renowned immigration attorney Carlos Spector.
ICE officials say the agency will prioritize those supervised released.
Anyone who poses a threat to public safety will remain in detention.
