El Paso - With a dive into the water, nearly 100 lifeguards from across El Paso came together for a great cause. The first annual Christian Castle Lifeguard Olympics pit 19 different lifeguard teams competing in challenges to raise awareness for water safety. and to honor the difference these safety experts make in the lives of young swimmers.

"Without these guards we'd have a shortage at the pools, we'd have drownings and lifeguards play a very role in water safety," says 26 year-old lifeguard, Andy Nunez.

The Lifeguard Olympics pay tribute to four-year old christian castle who drowned in a family friend's pool in 2006.

Shortly after their son's death, Eddie Castle and his wife Laura started the "Drowning Prevention Coalition, an organization aimed to promote safe swimming in the summer and beyond.

"It shows that everyone has water safety at the focus of what they're doing during the summer I want to send a big thank you to the lifeguards for all hard work they do at the pools to stay prepared and to stay aware," states Eddie Castle.

The day included the city's champion life-saving swimmers competing in a rescue relay and a victim rescue.

Christian's mom was thrilled with the turnout at the event. Laura Castle says her son's memory not only shines through the prestine water, but through every person who jumped in the pool Sunday.

"i couldn't have asked for more. We were going to be happy if we got 10 teams, and here we have double the amount and everyone seems as pumped up as we are. I know that my son's memory is living on in everyone who came out today,"
