A two-vehicle crash on Melendres Street on Thursday morning injured a woman and snapped an El Paso Electric power pole. The cleanup from the accident is expected to close the intersection throughout the day.

Shortly after 8:00 a.m. Thursday morning, Las Cruces police and fire was dispatched to a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Melendres and Brown Road. A black Honda Accord was heading eastbound on Brown Road and failed to stop at the intersection. The car collided into a utility truck that was heading north on Melendres.

After the two vehicles collided, the utility truck smashed into a power pole on the northeast corner of the intersection. The pole snapped, but remained standing and continued to hold the 4,000 volt power volts above ground.

The 24-year-old woman driving the Honda was injured in the crash and transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver and passenger of the utility truck were shaken but did not report any serious injuries.

El Paso Electric personnel do not anticipate any power outages while they replace the pole but did state that a portion of the intersection will remain closed for most of Thursday.

The driver of the Honda will likely receive a citation for running a stop sign.
