LAS CRUCES, N.M. — It was a night of healthy eating for several kids and their families at the Boys and Girls Club Thursday evening as they learned about healthy food choices.
The dinner was organized to celebrate a 6-week program put together by Molina Healthcare in order to help curb childhood obesity.
"You talk to some kids and they say a good meal is Doritos and Cheetos and we need to really look and see about eating healthy," said Tony Martinez, community outreach supervisor for Molina Healthcare.
The New Mexico Department of Health estimates about 14 percent of kindergartners and a fifth of third graders are obese.
The kids at the Boys and Girls Club learned about healthy food choices from Chef Chris Lawrence.
The group served dinner to their families that consisted of peas and carrots, mashed potatoes and baked chicken.
"They're learning and taking this stuff back home with them and into their lives," Lawrence said.
The kids enjoyed working together and vowed to eat healthier.
"I don't usually get to cook at home cause I don't really want to and since I got to be with my friends and cook, it was a lot more fun," said Caitlin Medley.
