Keep kids active and healthy with outdoor activities

Summer is right around the corner and that means longer days and more time outdoors.  According to experts, it's important to get kids off the couch and get them out to play.

Being physical helps youngsters build up their muscles and bones and keeps their weight down.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, children and adolescents should be physically active at least one hour a day.

The CDC recommends a child should participate in some form of aerobic activity like riding a bike, hiking or swimming daily, to keep the heart strong.

"I usually take them to the park so they can run and get some exercise," said Ruby Contreras from Central El Paso.

A recent study found that children who participated in P-E every day, were more likely to be stronger as they got older.

Jumping rope or running at least three days per week can keep bones healthy.

Octavio Urias, a local fitness trainer shared some advice for parents on the best way to keep kids active.

"Always lead by example. Be active, eat healthy and your kids will follow," said Urias.  "You want them to grow up with healthy habits, an active lifestyle so that they don't need to worry in the future about losing weight or health issues."
