Jury selection in Fidencio Valdez's death penalty trial got underway Monday morning.

El Paso police officers said in December 2010 Valdez shot and killed Julio Barrios,18 outside a northeast El Paso home in what they said was a drug deal gone bad.

Valdez was later linked in a Thanksgiving Day murder of the same year. In that case, El Paso County Sheriff's Deputies said Valdez and two other men tried to rob a Socorro bar. They said trucker Ralph Tucker tried to stop the men and that's when they allegedly shot and killed him.

Currently prosecutors are only trying Valdez on Barrios' murder. They said because they are seeking the death penalty it could take months to seat a jury. The trial is expected to start in June.
