Jalisco Cafe: Serving the community for 60 years

Thursday, July 24, 2014 - 11:18am

Nestled in downtown El Paso is Jalisco Cafe. A small local restaurant that might be overlooked by those passing by, but it serves as an important part of the community.
Jalisco Cafe has been open for 60 years.

"My aunt started this place with one room, just one little room, and we grew. And she built this place from the ground up," said Hector Chavez, general manager.

After she passed, Hector Chavez took the reigns.

"She was a very generous person. Never denied anybody food, even if they had no money, so I startled doing the same thing," Chavez said.

Chavez often accepts what people can pay, whether it's a few cents, or a few bucks.

On Thanksgiving Day, he opens the doors of Jalisco Cafe to everyone.
What started off as one turkey and an intimate group of guests, has now turned into something much bigger.

"Probably this year, I'm going to do about 5. So I'll be busy, busy on Thanksgiving," he said.

But thanksgiving isn't the only busy day for Chavez and his employees. Chavez gets to work at 6 a.m. on weekdays and at 4 a.m. on weekends.

On Sundays, their busiest day, Chavez said people wait in line outside the restaurant with pots, waiting to buy Menudo. He said they sell about 500 to 600 pounds every Sunday.

Even the walls of the restaurant display its success, with countless awards, articles, autographed pictures. But Chavez said being able to serve the community is his real gage of success.

"I feel lucky, I feel blessed, and it's great, it keeps me going," he said.

Jalisco Cafe is open Monday through Friday 7:30-4:00. Saturday and Sunday from 6:00 to 3:30.

It's located at 1029 E 7th Ave, El Paso, TX 79901.
