El Paso TX (KDBC) — The Obama Administration is taking a lot of heat over it's new health care website, but that's not the only thing you have to worry about if you sign up for insurance. Now fraud is a major concern.
The National Consumer League is receiving reports of scammers cold-calling people, demanding social security numbers, and sometimes telling those people they could go to jail if they don't buy insurance.
Experts discourage people from paying anyone to enroll in the health insurance marketplace and should instead use navigators. Navigators are people who are specially trained by the federal government and all private information is protected under federal law.
But what about a business advertising ACA enrollment help? NewsChannel Nine went to one and spoke with the owner, who is also a tax consultant, financial advisor and insurance agent. John Romero had to train just like a navigator to help his current clients transition to the Affordable Care Act and now offers help to anyone that needs it.
"Trying to run these workshops. Teaching our client base ok what is out there and what's available out there for you, now that theres a new plan in town. We've got to run by the laws of this new plan. People are gonna be asking questions January through March while they're sitting down talking about their tax returns. These two are related," said John Romero.
Romero has been an insurance agent for ten years.
