Inmate set fire sending one correctional officer to the hospital

An inmate being housed at the Central New Mexico Correctional Facility intentionally set a fire in his cell for the purpose of causing himself harm.

The Special Operations Response Team immediately responded to extinguish the fire and rescue the inmate yesterday evening.

After the fire was extinguished the entire facility was evacuated for a short period of time.

One correctional officer was treated and released from an area hospital for smoke inhalation.

No other injuries were reported.

The inmate was cooperative and was transferred to the Mental Health Unit for evaluation and observation.
