El Paso (KDBC) — A section of both westbound and eastbound lanes on I-10 will be closed from Sunday at 5 a.m. to Monday at 6 a.m. for the construction of the 1966 overpass.
The westbound lanes are closed from Porfirio Diaz to Schuester..
The eastbound lanes are be closed between Sunland Park and the Spaghetti Bowl.
Chris Johnson is traveling from Tucson to San Antonio. He said the closure caught him off guard.
"Traffic was so backed up. I just jumped off at the next available exit and I'm just trying to navigate my way through town right now," Johnson said.
Frank Castorena, an El Paso resident said he understands that the closures are necessary.
"Be patient. They're going to get fixed. It's the only way.. just time,' he said.
"I wouldn't expect that. Normally, when they work, they work the eastbound or westbound lanes. They usually divert traffic to a single lane. At least it keeps it moving. So I'm surprised they're closing it all together," Johnson said.
This project was halted last month when two workers were killed by an 18-year-old Fort Bliss soldier.
Police say Michael Nieves drove intoxicated through the barriers.
TxDOT says they've taken extra precautions this time.
"We have increased the safety. All the exits and entrance ramps both eastbound and westbound will have barriers, including water. They're pretty strong and they will hold anybody going through," said Blanca Del Valle, spokesperson for TxDOT.
