LAS CRUCES, N.M. — Human skeletal remains were found by a hiker east of Vado Friday evening, according to the Dona Ana County Sheriff's Office.
The remains were found near Bishop's Cap along with a belt buckle and a shoe.
This is the second time in the last two months human remains have been found in Dona Ana County.
Last February a horseback rider near a rest stop on West Picacho also found bones and called police.
The Las Cruces Police Department determined the remains were human and sent them to a lab in Albuquerque for testing.
Police combed through area looking for clothes or other personal property that could possibly help identify the remains.
"i would definitely be alarmed and I'd probably call the police and see if somebody can come out here and check it out," said Laura Guardado, who hikes on a regular basis at "A" Mountain in Las Cruces.
Guardado said she tries to hike several times a month enjoying the warm weather and the scenery.
She said she has never seen anything strange.
"No, I haven't seen anything out of the ordinary," Guradado said.
She added it's possible with more people taking advantage of the warm weather it's possible that's why both cases have been reported so close to each other.
The Sheriff's Department is looking for information on identifying the remains.
Anyone with information can call the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Department at (575) 525-8897 or Las Cruces Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). People can also send a tip via text message to CRIMES (274637), keyword LCTIPS.
