Help Prevent A Fire: Christmas Safety Tips

Tuesday, November 27, 2012 - 1:06am

The most joyous of times can also be deadly.

As the holidays approach, the El Paso Fire Department is urging people to look for and eliminate potential dangers from holiday lights and decorations that could lead to fires and injuries.

Fire Marshall, Calvin Shanks says a major concern comes with electrical tree fires.

"As we look at the christmas trees make sure it stays wet and moist and you have plenty of water in it. Make sure you have it at least three feet away from any heating device or appliances so it doesn't dry out and we don't have a quick fire"

More tips to follow:

Inspect holiday lights each year for frayed wires, bare spots, gaps in the insulation, broken or cracked sockets, and excessive kinking or wear before putting them up.

Use only lighting listed by an approved testing laboratory.

All decorations should be nonflammable or flame-retardant and placed away from heat vents. If you are using a metallic or artificial tree, make sure it is flame retardant.

Consider using battery-operated flameless candles, which can look, smell and feel like real candles.

Make sure candles are in stable holders and place them where they cannot be easily knocked down. Keep candles at least 12 inches from anything that can burn. Never leave a room or go to bed with candles burning.
