Heartbreaking Loss For UTEP, Fans Still Have Hope

Saturday, March 12, 2011 - 11:06pm

EL PASO - It was an emotional game for UTEP Miner fans. There was excitement during the lead and heartbreak during the loss, but despite the outcome fans aren't giving up just yet.

"It's just a tough loss," Ronald Chase Osburn said.

Osburn summed it up for all Miner fans.

"I'm proud of all the seniors, but I'd really like to have won and had the automatic bid into the tournament."

Tomorrow evening a selection committee can still pick the Miners to advance to the NCA Tournament and, although it's highly unlikely, Miner fans aren't giving up hope.

"We have way more than 20 wins, so I think we should be dancing. We'll see," Osburn said.

"Anything is possible. You can't tell with the commission. They should pick two teams, and these should be the two teams that do go. We'll just have to wait and see," Jaime Arrieto said.

If you think you're nervous as a fan waiting to find out, imagine how the players feel, especially seniors like Randy Culpepper. He and the others have played with heart during their entire college career, including today for what looked like a packed house at the Don Haskins Center.

"Randy has been amazing in his four years here, watching him play, interact with the students and everybody in El Paso. He's going to be missed. He's going to be one of those people that when he comes back anytime he's going to be welcomed with open arms," Ruffino Castro said.
