Hearing Discusses Delay of City Hall Demolition

Friday, November 16, 2012 - 7:05pm

EL PASO — A hearing discussing the demolition of City Hall started at 3 p.m Friday in federal court.

City Hall is scheduled to be demolished in March. Former Mayor Ray Salazar and two other plantiffs are suing the City of El Paso and the city representatives that voted for the demolition of City Hall.

Salazar is one of three people who have taken the stand. He was mayor from 1977-1979, when the current city hall was built for $8.6 million.

He said the building has a life of 100 years, meaning it's good for at least another 47 years.
He said the demolition and ballpark will cost citizens $198 million. The group wants the judge to delay the demolition and that the item be put on the ballot in the general election ballot in May.
