Gun Control Debate Increasing Demand For Guns In Borderland

Monday, December 17, 2012 - 9:17pm

Recent mass shootings like Friday's attack on an elementary school in Connecticut and the shooting in the Oregon mall have sparked fears among gun owners and potential gun owners of future restrictions on gun ownership. Those fears were realized Sunday when U.S. Senator Diane Feinstein of California said she will introduce a bill next month banning assault weapons. But before that announcement, sales were already increasing at area gun shops as many were anticipating just such an announcement. Valerie Moreno owns Country Wide Shooters off Sunland Park Drive. She says gun control talk has been good for business.  "Definitely after this weekend, we've seen the difference...a lot of the increase is towards the what we call the assault weapons firearms, the AR-51 rifles the AKs...a lot of increase in that."

Legislation potentially banning assault weapons is expected to be introduced in both the House of Representatives and the Senate when Congress reconvenes in January.
