South El Paso's Centro de Salud Familiar La Fe clinic found a new way to bring awareness to colon cancer on Wednesday. The clinic, located at 721 South Ochoa in the Segundo Barrio unveiled a giant inflatable colon measuring 25 feet long and 10 feet tall on Wednesday.
Le Fe's Senior Companion Program is promoting the health fair that targets El Paso's senior population. As part of La Fe's efforts to participate in the 2013 Binational Health week, more than 50 area health organizations are expected to display and promote services to improve the health and well-being of underserved populations.
Members of Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center's (TTHSC) ACCION (Against Colorectal Cancer In Our Neighborhoods) program was on hand at the health fair to guide the public through the giant inflatable colon and provide education and colorectal screenings for qualifying participants.
TTHSC's ACCION is a community-wide collaboration aimed at increasing community awareness and knowledge about colorectal cancer and increasing colorectal cancer screening rates in uninsured residents of El Paso County. In its two years of existence, ACCION has provided free screening, including colonoscopies, to over 3,400 individuals who otherwise could not afford to get screened.
Through the provision of free colonoscopies, seven cancer cases were diagnosed and are currently receiving treatment.
ACCION is funded by the Cancer Prevention & Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT). For more information about the ACCION Program, contact ACCION coordinators at 215-5574.
