February is 'Heart Health Awareness Month' and our sister station, NewsChannel 9 is going Red all month long to help spread awareness.

Heart disease is the number one killer of women in the United States.

On Saturday, NewsChannel 9 and the Sierra Providence Health Network hosted the 'Keep the Beat Health Check' at Cielo Vista Mall, where the NC9 news team encouraged shoppers to stop by for free cholesterol, blood pressure and BMI tests from 11 to 3 o'clock.

"Most of the time, women don't know that they have a heart issue or high cholesterol or anything that concerns the heart, and I think this is a great way to get involved in their health issues," said Dana Abbott.

"This is a huge opportunity for people to take advantage of a free screening, so you can see where your stats are, and you can start making sure you're taking the steps to lead a heart healthy life," said Audrey Garcia with Sierra Providence Health Network.

NC9 is also partnering with Sierra Providence Health Network and the American Heart Association for a special event in March, 'The Heart Walk.' The event is free to the public.
