Free backpacks for all El Paso area students

Thousands of local students are getting a big back to school gift.

Today students from the Bel-Air and Hanks High School JROTC programs spent the afternoon stuffing 2,500 backpacks with school supplies.

The Ysleta Independent School District will be handing them out at a rally this tomorrow. They're absolutely free for students attending any El Paso area school district.

"It's very exciting. Our instruction encourages our kids to do community service and so this is one way to give back," Captain Eileen Williams, Senior Army Instructor, with Hanks Army JROTC.

"It's always a good feeling to give back and help the community we live in," said Isaiah Hernandez, a high school senior.

If you want to pick up a backpack, the back to school rally will take place tomorrow from 9 to 11 at the YISD Central Office at 9600 sims.

Backpacks are limited to one per student. Students need to wear their school uniform to the rally. Backpacks will not be given to parents.
