El Paso, TX (KDBC) — Soldiers of 4th Special Troops Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, gathered with students of Cielo Vista Elementary School and their parents for an evening of family fitness fun, April 30.
With the sights and sounds of Nintendo’s Wii Dance and the laughter of children permeating the school, children and their parents were met by the Soldiers of 4th STB in their Army combat uniforms. The Soldiers were there in support of their partners in education to help encourage a healthier lifestyle of being physically fit.
Kevin Wegleitner, a parent of a Cielo Vista Elementary School student, was impressed by the support shown by the STB Soldiers.
“I love the fact that the Soldiers are here,” said Wegleitner. “It’s a good influence for the kids to see the Soldiers as part of the community.”
All of the activity stations had Soldiers present to act as coaches for the children as they negotiated the challenges. The Soldiers aren’t a new sight to children and faculty of the school, as they have been there often as part of the PIE program.
Debbie Jacquez, the parent liaison for Cielo Vista Elementary School, was encouraged by the event.
“The children love to see the Soldiers here at the school,” said Jacquez. “It’s very exciting to have them here and it helps the school out.”
Although only a few of the exercises like the pushups and crunches mirrored the Army’s Physical Fitness Program, the spirit of the event was evident in the faces of the smiling children. They were challenged in a modified version of hopscotch where they had to roll big, green dice and perform the exercise. Parents, children and Soldiers alike, jumped rope, hoola-hooped and shot baskets – in the name of promoting a healthier lifestyle.
“My son is a Soldier stationed at Fort Hood, Texas,” said Jacquez. “It’s really awesome to see his fellow Soldiers out here making a difference in the school and community.”
This was one of many events between Cielo Vista Elementary and the Soldiers of the 4th STB this year.
The Soldiers are looking forward to a continued relationship with the school throughout the rest of the school year.
