SAN ELIZARIO, Texas — Soldiers from Company A, 1st Battalion, 41st Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division joined forces with Familias Triunfadoras last week to help a local family in need from San Elizario, Texas.
Familias Triunfadoras is a women-led nonprofit organization with a mission to empower women and families.
Maria Covernali, an organizer with Familias Triunfadoras, said that the house the Soldiers were working on housed a family with three kids who’s father is very ill and had just had surgery on his leg.
“We really, really appreciate the help that Fort Bliss Soldiers give us for these families,” said Covernali.
She also said that this is not the first time Soldiers from this battalion have volunteered their time to help her organization improve living conditions for local families.
The Soldiers started cleaning the yard by clearing hundreds of pounds of scrap metal, bricks and concrete blocks. Next they turned their attention to the interior of the house by removing an old, worn out carpet, replacing Sheetrock and tearing down a ceiling in the living room. They also assisted a local plumber replace a sink in the bathroom.
By the end of the three-day adventure at the house, the Soldiers had greatly improved the living conditions for the family.
“I think community service is good,” said Spc. Joshua Au, a Soldier who participated in the gracious experience. “It shows the people in the community around El Paso that Soldiers care and are willing to help people in need.”
