FORT BLISS, TEXAS (KDBC) — A press conference Friday morning revealed results of an investigation into claims of radioactive material buried in the Biggs Airfield area of Fort Bliss.
Though detection of alpha and beta radiation was confirmed, Fort Bliss officials assured the public that the contamination was contained, indicating no danger to area residents and workers. More importantly, they assured the community's water supply has not been affected by the discovery, according to Maj. Joe Buccino, Fort Bliss spokesperson.
At least 100 callers had contacted the post with concerns of being exposed to the radiation, including 13 workers claiming to have worked during the time the contaminants were buried. Maj. Buccino said Fort Bliss officials would be returning calls to inform them of findings no later than Monday.
