Folks in Vinton Hope to Dodge Floods

VINTON - Many folks around the Borderland are crossing their fingers, hoping their property or homes are spared this weekend, if there's flooding. That's especially the case for one woman in Vinton.

Celeste Duby doesn't want a repeat of August 2006.

"It was very scary because the water was going really high, and they said the ones that were on this side of the arroyo were going to be stuck here,” said Duby.

She and her family eventually got out, but Duby said she can't forget what it was like to witness the rising water, swallowing her home.

“We jumped on the bed...and by husband ran back there, trying to see how we can stop the water from coming into the house,” stated Duby.

Those flood waters, destroyed her home.

"The back section of the house was full of mud and we had a lot of material-- all of it got damaged,” added Duby.

Duby wasn't the only one whose life was turned upside down by the floods in 2006; and as rain threatens the area this weekend, the Vinton police chief urged everyone to put safety first.

"Don't cross a low-water crossing if there's water on the roadway-- not only because of the low amount of water that it takes to get you off the road. If you don't know what's under the water, the road may not be there,” said Police Chief K.W. Mansion.

Meantime, Duby is hoping her home won't suffer the same fate it did years ago. She said she's saved enough money to build a six-foot cement wall to surround her house. The project is already underway, but it obviously won't be done in time for this weekend, when flooding is a possibility.
