EL PASO — For years, Ascarate Lake has been the one place in El Paso that people can go to fish. Not anymore. The central El Paso lake is now a no fishing zone, after the waters tested positive last week for golden algae. State fish and wildlife officials tested the lake after several dozen fish turned up dead. The blooms are often caused by drought or poor quality water. Wildlife officials expect the blooms will dissipate after a few weeks, but until then no fishing is being allowed. The lake also tested positive for algae last spring.
