The Chikungunya virus has finally taken up residence in the United States.

The Centers for Disease Control is reporting a man in Florida has the first locally acquired case of the debilitating mosquito-borne virus.

Health officials said unlike others in the U.S. who have had the disease, in this case the man had not traveled outside the country recently.

The virus is not deadly, but it can extremely painful with arthritis-like symptoms lasting for weeks.

It was originally identified in East Africa in the 1950s, but the CDC said about seven months ago it started showing up in the Caribbean.
