Four cars and two motorcycles are a total loss after a fire ripped through the back of a carport in an Anthony, New Mexico home.

Firefighters said the fire, which was called in around 10 p.m. on Monday, spread quickly throughout the back area of the home on Lincoln and Ruth streets. Fortunately, they were able to get to the home in time before the fire spread to the rest of the area. "The fire was pretty intense due to the fact that it was under the carport. So it had no where to go so it spread pretty quickly," Captain Arturo Hererra said. Captain Herrera is with the Dona Ana County Fire and Emergency Services.

Hererra told us residents in nearby homes were evacuated for some time, but they were able to go back to their homes once fire fighters cleared the scene. That is, except for one family, "Just for their protection and their safety, we recommend that they don't stay in the home, until we come and evaluate it tomorrow and ensure it is safe for them to stay in the home," Herrerra said of the family who stays at the home.

He was unable to tell us exactly how many people live in the home, but he did say the family will be staying with relatives in the meantime.

Other parts of the home were minimally damaged. Hererra said they will be going to the home on Tuesday morning to assess the rest of the home. Fire fighters will also be able to determine whether or not the family can come back inside the home.
