EL PASO — Update:
El Paso Fire Department investigators say a 7-11 convenient store in Northeast El Paso is a total loss after a fire there Tuesday night. Fire crews were dispatched to the call at 5710 Hondo Pass after 8:00 p.m. Upon arrival, fire crews saw heavy smoke and flames coming from the convenient store and saw the store was completely filled with smoke. Approximately 9 units and 25 firefighters responded to the scene.
Three individuals, two clerks and one customer, were inside the store at the time of the fire and safely escaped. No injuries were reported. Within five minutes the fire had spread so quickly that it began to vent through the roof. At that point, firefighters’ safety, protection of surrounding structures and containing the fire from the outside of the structure became the number one priority. Fire crews contained the fire in less that an hour, at approximately 9:08 p.m., but continued to extinguish hot spots and small rekindles until 10 p.m. The fire caused extensive damage to the store which caused the roof to collapse. Initially, the fire was thought to be a threat to three houses directly behind the 7-Eleven but fire crews contained the fire to the store and did not have to evacuate the neighborhood. As a safety precaution, Sun Metro was on the scene to provide residents with shelter from the cold temperature if needed. No residents were displaced.
At this time, the cause of the fire remains under investigation. The convenient store is considered to be a total loss.
