El Paso (KDBC) — As they cheer on teams in the world cup, many fans in the Sun City are also rooting for a Major League S (MLS) soccer team to call El Paso its home.
Mountain Star Sports Group announced they had discussed the possibility with MLS earlier this month. The success of the Chihuahuas baseball team caught the eye of officials with MLS.
"If you ask me, sports is the main thing for a growing city. It's important for the city to have good sports. It gives us a thing to do, spend time with the family. I'm for the Chihuahuas baseball, and now soccer would be awesome," said Roger Molina, an El Paso resident.
And to show their support, soccer fans are gearing up and getting ready to watch an exhibition game on July 6th at the Sun Bowl Stadium. The game is at 8 p.m. between Chivas de Guadalajara and Cruzeiro, a team from Brazil.
Mountain Star Sports Group said this will be a chance for MLS to see just how passionate residents are about soccer.
"I got four tickets already. We have to support them, they have to be here in El Paso," said Pachelli Llamas, a resident of west El Paso. He also said he has been encouraging his friends to attend as well.
Many fans agree, if El Paso can get behind a baseball team, bringing a soccer team here will be no problem.
"A lot of people in El Paso didn't like baseball. I think it's a good indicator that even if people are against it, they'll still go because it's something to do," said Ivan Tarin, a west El Paso resident.
And in the end, they said it'll serve as much more than just a sport, but a way for residents to unite.
"It'll bring El Paso together. It'll just be one more reason for a family, a group of friends, or people to get together, at one place, enjoy, have fun," Llamas said.
