Firefighters from the Socorro, Horizon and El Paso Fire Departments responded to a large house fire in Socorro early Wednesday morning.

The fire started at 4:00 a.m. in the 9900 block of Laurie Jo Lane. According to relatives, a man inside the house was awake when the fire started. He alerted his wife and two young daughters who were sleeping. They were able to escape safely, along with the family dog.

There was extensive damage to the front of the home, and the roof of the home completely burned off. The home is considered a total loss. Two cars parked in the garage are also considered a total loss.

Relatives of the family said they believe the house could have been salvaged if firefighters would have arrived sooner. One relative said it took the Socorro Volunteer Fire Department 45 minutes to arrive and start attacking the flames.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The Red Cross was on the scene to assist the family. They will be staying with family members in Clint.
