El Paso has seen a 9% increase in Auto Theft so far in 2014 compared with 2013, and the El Paso Police Department Auto Theft Task Force is teaming up with Allstate Insurance to offer free Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) Etching for free to the public.

VIN etching is a process where the vehicle's identification number is etched into the glass of the car through a chemical means. The VIN is the fingerprint of the car and is exclusive to that vehicle. El Paso Police say that having VIN etching makes a vehicle less valuable to a would-be thief because the parts will become very difficult to sell to shops, or individuals.

Most insurance companies offer a discount for having VIN etching. This is typically a $100 to $500 value that will be offered to the public for free. The event will happen Saturday, May 3, 2014 from 10:00am to 2:00 pm in the Academy Sports parking lot, located at 201 S. Americas.

EPPD along with Allstate Insurance will partner to bring food and promotional items to the public for free at the event while supplies last.
