EP Sheriffs, Border Patrol on scene of SWAT standoff near Fabens

UPDATE: 6:07 p.m.

El Paso County Sheriffs officials have confirmed that the suspect in the SWAT standoff has shot himself. It was not immediately clear if the suspect was still alive.

UPDATE: 3:40 p.m.

Crisis negotiaton team is currently on the scene trying to convince the man to surrender himself to authorities.

In a bizarre twist, the man has asked to speak to one of the local news reporters inside of his home. The Sheriffs' Office says they will not send the reporter in to speak with the man and the reporter is not part of the investigation.


El Paso Sheriffs officials have confirmed that there is a SWAT situation in a home located in the 18000 block of Middle Island Road, approximately three miles south east of Fabens.

According to scanner traffic, a traffic stop was initiated near the residence at approximately 11:30 a.m. Sheriffs officers noticed the subject had weapon in his vehicle, and ordered him to move away from his vehicle. The man then fled to a residence in the 18000 block of Middle Island Rd., and fired shots at the Sheriffs' Deputy as he fled. The Deputy was not injured.

The man is currently barricaded in the home and he has pointed a weapon at officers. Officers in the area are preparing a staging area awaiting arrival of the SWAT team.

Law enforcement is in the process of shutting down multiple roads around Middle Island Rd.and Island Rd. south of Fabens. They are evacuating any families who are in the area along Middle Island and Tornillo Island Rd.
