EL PASO — One of El Paso's own was recognized Monday for helping hundreds across the borderland.
Angel Gomez, who helped start Operation Hope, received a congressional award from Representative Silvestre Reyes.
Along with a Lifetime Achievement Award from Mayor John Cook. Operation Hope is a non-profit that aims to help others in their time of need, whatever the situation.
It all came as a surprise to Gomez.
"My wife told me this morning,'you better take some pants, because I'm always in shorts." he said. "Because we are going to take lunch at the El Paso Club. That's when she told me, you're going to be getting a reward from Mayor Cook and Congressman Reyes. And I said 'Oh my God."
Operation Hope began in 2009 and most recently helped give out thousands of turkeys and trimmings for families this past weekend.
