El Paso, TX (KDBC) — It's official. The El Paso Independent School District school board is being replaced by a board of managers. Current board president Isela Castañon-Williams has confirmed the Texas Education Agency has received a letter from the U.S. Department of Justice, approving the appointment of a board of managers.
The TEA replaced the current board with a board of managers last year, but needed clearance from the DOJ to make it legal.
The new board will include Dee Margo, a former state representative, Blanca Enriquez, who runs Region 19's Head Start Program, and Ed Archuleta, the retiring CEO of El Paso Water Utilities.
The other two members are Carmen Arrieta-Candelaria, city of El Paso CFO, and Judy Castleberry, the TEA monitor currently assigned to the district. We do not know yet when the new board will hold its first meeting.
Outgoing Board President Isela Castañon-Williams told us, "I am disappointed the Department of Justice has ruled against the vote of the people of El Paso."
