The annual Muscular Dystrophy Association's fill the boot drive starts Friday, so Thursday a kick-off celebration was held at Firefighter Memorial Park. The fill the boot drive will run through May 27th.
Firefighters will be on El Paso street corners to raise money to help find treatments and cures for the neuromuscular disease.
"Our effort is to collect $100,000 this year. We'll be out there in the afternoons and we'll be out there in the mornings at the street corners, so we encourage the public to donate when you see us out there," one firefighter said.
"That one dollar that you may donate may be that one dollar that will find the cure for this disease,” said City Representative Emma Acosta.
A panhandling ordinance went into effect last week prohibiting anyone from selling anything from a median or within 15 feet of street corners. However, under state law firefighters are allowed to fundraise on city streets because the money they collect is donated to charity.
