El Paso County will discuss possible changes to health benefits after DOMA ruling

Wednesday, June 26, 2013 - 7:21pm

It remains to be seen what kind of impact today's rulings will have on domestic partner benefits offered to county employees here in El Paso. County Judge Veronica Escobar is now talking with the county's attorney about potential impacts on the health benefits program.

“The question now is, and I've sent her that text, what does this mean for domestic partner's benefits? Should we still go to plus one just to be, you know, on the absolute, overly conservative side so that we can never, ever be challenged? Is that necessary? And so I'm waiting to hear back and get a legal opinion,” Judge Veronica Escobar said.

The judge says she will speak with the county attorney in depth about the issue and added they may discuss the health benefits plan in Executive Session in Monday’s meeting.
