El Paso, TX (KDBC) — El Paso County Sheriff's Deputies are investigating a deputy-involved shooting in Northwest El Paso Thursday night.
The incident began around 8:40 p.m. when a Deputy Sergeant initiated a traffic stop on a grey pickup truck with three men inside near Campus Park St. and South Desert Blvd. When the deputy approached the vehicle, he allegedly detected a strong odor of marijuana and worked to detain the driver. While in the process of detaining the driver, one of the passengers fled the scene and ran into the nearby neighborhood.
While deputies were searching for the man near a home in the 6800 block of Steffers St., the homeowner began shooting towards the deputies, not realizing in the darkness that they were law enforcement. The deputies immediately returned fire on the homeowner. No one was hit or injured as a result of the exchange of gunfire.
The passenger that fled the original scene was located a short distance away and taken into custody. As a result, two of the men inside of the truck, 20-year-old Jesse Angel Lopez and 18-year-old Ilizha Deon Jones were arrested and charged.
Lopez, the driver of the truck, was charged with possession of a controlled substance and tampering with evidence. He is being held on a $36,200 bond. Jones was charged with possession of marijuana and evading arrest. He is being held on a $2,000 bond.
No charges have been filed against the homeowner; the shooting is still under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division, Internal Affairs, and the District Attorney’s Office.
