El Paso County owes Western Refining $1.8 million

El Paso County is being told to pay up. They owe nearly $1.8 million to Western Refining. This after the Central Appraisal District reached a less-than-expected tax settlement with Western Refining.

The initial annual evaluation of the company came in at $780 million. That would have raised Western Refining's county taxes by more than a million dollars, but the company fought back, saying that was too much. A judgement was then issued, raising the company's value by just $40 million.

As a result, the county now has to pay back nearly $1.8 million.

"We got the tax money in and as soon as we got it in We gave back the excess. It didn't impact our reserves. It didn't impact our delivery of services. We were anticipating this," said El Paso County Judge Veronica Escobar.

The money has to be returned by the county within 45 days or interest can be assessed.
