Women on a Roll

The Sun City Roller Girls prepare for Sunday's bout...

Saturday, August 7, 2010 - 9:35pm

EL PASO - Hell hath no fury like a woman on a roll.

"There's nothing like it, the adrenaline. You've got these girls that you're beating up around the track, but you love them...they're your girls."

The Sun City Roller Girls... a group of 80 women who lead double lives on quad skates.

"You always have their back. They've got yours. Regardless of what happens on the track. You might not be the best of friends if they're on the other team during a game, but at the end everybody's hugging each other...it's a good time."

Carolyn Holcomb... also known as "Trench Tramp"... doesn't exactly have a one-track mind.
She works as a nurse in the military by day and delivers the pain in this full-contact sport by night.

"A lot of my peers and coworkers are kind of like you do what in your spare time? I leave the barracks wearing this outfit and they kind of look at me funny."

Full-time UTEP student Virginia Montes...who hits the books before hitting opponents... says she's developed nerves of steel as a roller girl.

"At the beginning of each game, each bout...I'm like oh my God I'm so nervous.  I have to go pee like every five minutes and I'm like I don't want to get hurt.  After the first couple of jams, you just get in the zone."

The girls roll under assumed names.

"You have all of the different, crazy names and you just get into that personna and that's who you are on the track. It's like a different alter-ego."

The bout takes place at the El Paso County Coliseum on Sunday at 6 p.m.
