UTEP Track & Field Hires Scott Roberts to Coaching Staff

UTEP head coach Mika Laaksonen and co-head coach Paul Ereng announced Tuesday the addition of Scott Roberts to the UTEP track and Field staff. Roberts will be overseeing UTEP’s sprints, jumps, hurdles and multievents.

“I think coach Scott Roberts is a perfect fit for our program,” head coach Mika Laaksonen said. “Scott is an experienced coach with a tremendous set of skills that will benefit our program. We are very fortunate to be able to hire a coach of his stature.”

“This program has been so successful over the years with all the national and individual titles,” Roberts said. “I’ve always admired this program throughout my career and it’s an honor to be able to come and be apart of UTEP.”

Roberts comes to UTEP from Alabama University where he served as an assistant coach in sprints, hurdles and jumps from 2007-11.

Roberts coached All-American Trish Bartholomew to second-place finishes in the 400m dash at the NCAA Outdoor and Indoor Championships in 2007. Roberts went on to coach Bartholomew in the 2008 Beijing Olympics in the 400m dash.

While at Alabama, Roberts mentored eight All-Americans, one World Championship participant, four SEC champions, nine All-SEC performers, two SEC Freshman Athletes of the Year, 22 NCAA Qualifiers and five Drake Relays Champions. Roberts has produced some of the best athletes in Alabama school history with 23 top-10 all-time marks including six school records.

At Alabama, Roberts work as a Speed Trainer and Consultant for Crimson Tide Football during the 2010-11 school year. He trained All-American and NFL first round draft choice Rolando McClain and All-American and second draft pick Javier Arenas.

Prior to Alabama, Roberts spent 10 years as an assistant coach at Iowa State University (1996-07) leading Olympian Aurelia Trywianska to the 2004 and 2008 Olypmic games in the 100 hurdles. During his time with the Cyclones, Roberts coached one World Champions finalist, three big 12 Champions and 21 All-Americans. Roberts’ student-athletes registered 52 school records during his time at Iowa State.

Roberts coached for one season at Drake University, where he coached Missouri Valley Conference Champions Ian Tullberg in the decathlon and David Williams in the 110m hurdles.

Roberts worked as a strengths and conditioning coach at Ohio State (1994-95) with the Buckeye football program under head coach John Cooper. Roberts’ responsibilities included working with Heisman Trophy winner Eddie George, All-Pro receiver Joey Galloway, Terry Glenn, Mike Vrabel and number one draft pick Dan Wilkinson.

Roberts, a Muscatine, Iowa native, graduated in 1991 from Midland Lutheran College with a Bachelor’s degree in Education and Social Science/Coaching. While at Midland Lutheran, he qualified three times for the NAIA Track and Field Championships. He was a member of the sixth-place distance medley relay team at the 1990 National Championships earning All-American honors. Roberts set eight school records at Midland Lutheran, including the indoor and outdoor 400m dashes.

He is a Certified strength and Conditioning Specialist and is a USATF Coaching Education Levels I and II Lead Instructor. Roberts is the author of two books: Progressions for Coaching the Sprints and Progressions from Coaching the Hurdles. Roberts and his wife, Kris, are parents of two children, Courtney and Zachary.
